Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general “last fling of summer” festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.
ENJOY THE DAY OFF! DO SOMETHING FUN!

GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC SCHOOL

August 18, 2008
Dear Good Shepherd School Community,
On August 27, 2008, we will be opening our doors for a new school year. I am sure you will agree that summer passed faster than ever!! I hope you all had a restful and fun-filled summer vacation and are ready to start the 2008-2009 school year, Good Shepherd’s 79th year!
I know you join me in welcoming back our wonderful teachers. We are especially excited to welcome Ms. Madeline Murphy in Grade 5, Ms. Megan Ciccarello who will share Grade 7 with Ms. Bhakta and also teach Spanish in all grades and Ms. Shelley Shalhoub, PE and After School Sports Co-ordinator. We will have a cleaning service clean the school every afternoon and we are happy to welcome back Mr. Ruddy Garcia from Good Shepherd Church who has done a great job being our “handyman” in the mornings. We are welcoming 35 new families to our school and our enrollment stands at 182 including 18 pre-schoolers. We continue to receive inquiries about the school every day. Keep spreading the good news about Good Shepherd so that we can continue to build our enrollment.
Our MORNING DROP OFF procedures have changed. They will now be the same as the AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP procedures. You will no longer be able to drop off your children in front of the school. For safety reasons, we will be keeping the front doors and the gate on Charleville Blvd. locked. Do not try to enter the school via either of those places. The only way to drop off children in the morning is from McCarty Dr. via the alley by the parking structure, proceeding SOUTH down the alley by the school and dropping off your children by the open gate. Have your children exit your car on the passenger side and enter the schoolyard gate. This will eliminate children exiting their car and passing behind or in front of the cars in the alley. If you wish to walk into the school with your children, you may park in the parking lot at the end of the alley and ACCOMPANY your children into the school yard via the alley. Children will NOT be allowed to walk in the alley alone. Please stay in your car and drop your children off by the gate where a teacher or Ruddy will be available to help you. The cars in the alley need to keep moving. This is an incentive for you to avoid the morning rush and get your children to school early.
If you are a pre-school parent, you will need to park in front of the school and walk your children through the black gate on Linden to sign in. You will receive a special parking sign to keep in your car to help us recognize which children belong in your car. The AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP will be the same as last year and the same as the morning drop off. ALL CHILDREN WILL BE PICKED UP FROM THE ALLEY. They will be lined up by class in the school yard and will be called to your car.
The morning drop off and afternoon pick up procedures are to protect your children and keep them safe. No child will be able to leave the school yard except through the gate to your car. Please cooperate and the lines will move smoothly. If you want to stop and wait or if you have business in the school office, you will have to find a place to park in the designated street parking areas (NOT the front of the school as this is for Pre-school parking only). Please make sure you watch the posted signs. Business with the teachers or office can be conducted AFTER 3:15 pm when the dismissal is finished. All school personnel are busy with supervision until that time and cannot have conferences or conduct business until after 3:15.
Again, school opens on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:55 am when the first bell rings. Your children are tardy if they are not in line at 8:00 am when the morning assembly begins. Supervision in the school yard begins at 7:30 am. Please do not drop your children off earlier than 7:30 and make every effort to have your children at school on time. Our After School Care program is changing to a Homework Club/Tutoring and that will begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2008. More information will follow.
Special thanks to our Parent Club, under the direction of Michelle Lovich, Faith Quabius and Barbara Terry for planning a Back to School Welcome Coffee and NEW PARENT ORIENTATION on the first day of school. Again, remember that the only parking is on the street (watch the signs) or you can use the parking lot on Linden , north of the school.
I hope you are looking forward to a wonderful school year. See you on August 27th at 8:00 am.
Sincerely,
Ms. Terry Miller
Principal
