History of St. Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick's Day.

The Chicago River is dyed green each year for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, shown here in 2008.

CLICK ON THE BLUE TEXT FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Saint Patrick’s Day (IrishLá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy’s Day or Paddy’s Day, is an annualfeast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa 385–461 AD), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on March 17.

The day is the national holiday of Ireland. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland, and a public holiday in the Republic of IrelandMontserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the rest of Canada, the United KingdomAustralia, the United States and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.

It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding[1] in the early part of the 17th century, and is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The date of the feast is occasionally moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; this happened in 1940 when Saint Patrick’s Day was observed on 3 April in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and is happening again in 2008, being observed on 15 March (though the State holiday in Ireland is not affected).[2] March 17 will not fall during Holy Week again until 2160.[3]

Results for the Academic Decathlon 2008

What a long tiresome day for all the decathletes as well as their family and friends.  Mrs. Widmann, Mrs. Dannon and I are very proud of our team.  Even though we didn’t do quite as well as we expected too, we still came home with two medals.  Claire won 3rd place for math  and Gabby took 10th place for fine arts.  They all put their best efforts forward.  Thank you to Jameson, Alexis, Justin, Jerry, Paula, Jordan, Leslie, Blean, Mike D., Caio and anyone else I may have forgotten for supporting our team.  You guys are true Crusaders and will get your points for science!

Our Team of Crusaders:  Sean, Claire, Ashley, Gabbi U., Gabby T., Paige, Matthew, Louis, Alex P., Dale, David

&  Amaris as manager.
